Allen R. Kates, MFAW, BCECR


A journalist, writer and editor for more than 35 years, Allen is author of the groundbreaking book, CopShock, Surviving Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Now in its second edition, and the basis for an A&E Television Network documentary, CopShock is the definitive guide on police PTSD.






Allen R. Kates, MFAW, BCECR, is a seasoned journalist and editor, and an expert on PTSD and police matters. Often specializing in police subjects, he has written television documentaries, current affairs programs, screenplays, newspaper stories, magazine articles and books for
more than 35 years.

He is author of the internationally acclaimed police trauma survival book, CopShock, Surviving Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), now in its second edition. Based on six years of research, the book helps law enforcement officers and their families cope with the aftermath of traumatic incidents. The A&E Television Network produced a documentary based on the book.

As well as being a journalist, Allen was the Head of Production for a television station for several years. In charge of a staff of 85 journalists, writers, directors, producers, and production assistants, he was responsible for producing 26 hours of original programming each week, including 2 news programs, documentaries, talk and entertainment shows. For about three years, he worked for 20th Century Fox Film Corporation in Hollywood as a development executive.

Allen is Board Certified in Emergency Crisis Response (BCECR) by the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress (AAETS) and has been trained in critical incident stress debriefing and management, suicide intervention, PTSD therapy, resiliency, crisis intervention and victimology.


He was trained in crisis intervention by the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF) and the Pima County Attorney's Victim Witness program. As a Victim Witness advocate, he helped victims of crime cope with tragedies such as robberies, beatings, rapes and murders. In that capacity, he worked closely with police officers.

He has a BA in journalism, a Master of Fine Arts degree in Writing (MFAW), and is a writing coach, editor and ghostwriter who helps others succeed with their book manuscripts.
